Yoga Synergy - Ether Sequence with Alex

 

Yoga Synergy is a flow style of yoga practice, with it's aim to teach yoga in a safe, fun and enjoyable way. Each posture is taught with simple through to complex versions, enabling you to vary the intensity of your practice. 

Emphasis is on balancing strength and flexibility, correct breathing with postures that flow into another posture building the sequence from standing to floor postures, finishing with pranayama and relaxation.

 

Ether is the last of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences and is practised at the time of year when the weather becomes warmer and summer is more than a promise. As the year is drawing to a close, there is much general exhaustion felt in body and mind.

Each of the Yoga Synergy sequences are unique in their own right, each designed around the five great elements, (earth, water, fire, air and ether) and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

The Ether sequence is designed to help maintain a sense of balance and calm, to unify and energise the body, mind and spirit, allowing our being to transition smoothly to the end of the year.

In Ayurvedic terms, Ether (Akasha) means ‘space’ or ‘emptiness’.  Ether is the lightest of the elements, it is the space in which everything happens; the field that is simultaneously the source of all matter and the space in which it exists. 

 

The intention with which we practise the Ether Sequence is to:

• help maintain a sense of balance and calm

• unify and energise the body, mind and spirit

• allow for a smooth transition to the end of the year

• help still the mind

 

Over an 6-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures, including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching both simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing each practice with pranayama and relaxation.

 

Students benefit from this Vinyasa flow style of Yoga in the following ways:

* Postures that stretch, tone and strengthen the entire skeletal system, working not only on the body’s frame but the internal organs, glands and nerves

* Concentration and attention in each posture encourages deep body awareness and relaxation

About the teacher:

Alex has been practising yoga for more than 20 years. During this time she studied a three-year training program with the founders of Yoga  Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

 As a qualified Yoga Synergy teacher, Alex ran the Yoga Synergy School in Manly, which she has taught at for more than 11 years. She  founded the Yoga Co-operative Manly and is excited about bringing Yoga Synergy to the Manly Yoga Centre. She has a warmth, energy  and real love for teaching that comes through in her classes.

 As the mother of three young children, Alex understands the importance of student practice to bring balance in our busy lives, using the  physical body to connect the mind and the breath. At the same time, she believes that safely challenging the body, in a fun and intelligent  way, helps create a strong, healthy body and a calm, focused mind – not just on the mat, but beyond.

 

Yoga Synergy is a unique style of yoga combining traditional yoga teaching methods with a strong background in physiotherapy. Developed by Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss in 1984, this style is designed to be safe and accessible to all yoga practitioners, whether beginners, intermediate and advanced.
