Yoga Synergy ~ The Water Sequence 8wk Course with Alex

Yoga Synergy ~ The Water Sequence 8wk Course with Alex

Water is the second of the 5 sequences – the weather is cooling down, but still comfortable.

The Yoga Synergy sequences are named in honour of the pancha mahabhuta (5 great elements) - Earth, water, fire, Air and ether.

Each of the sequences are unique in their own right, and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

The water sequence practice boosts our immune system in preparation for the winter. Water is the binding element, the conductor of all the other elements, necessary for survival.

Our blood, lymph and other fluids move between our cells and through our vessels, bringing energy, carrying away waste, regulating temperature, and carrying hormonal information from one area to another.

The intention with which we practise the water sequence is to bring about change through fluid movement.

Over an 8-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing each practice with pranayama and relaxation.

This unique style of yoga incorporates asanas (postures), vinyasa ( dynamic movement with breath), pranayama ( breathing practices) and meditation. Yoga Synergy is a dynamic moving meditation thal links postures with breath. With a physiotherapy background that provides students of all abilities a strong but safe practice.

Key 5 points for the Water sequence:

1.     Boost your immune system (in preparation for the cooler months)

2.     Tone the organs and strengthen connective tissue

3.     Clear stagnation in the meridians/energy channels; promoting good health

4.     Develop good breathing techniques

5.     Still the mind

Yoga Synergy is a dynamic style of yoga and students benefit from:

• Postures that stretch, tone and strengthen the entire skeletal system, working not only the body’s frame but the internal organs, glands and nerves

• Concentration and attention in each posture that encourages deep body awareness and relaxation

• Breathing exercises that refresh and cleanse the body and help to calm the mind

• Improved vitality and flexibility

• Enhanced immune system response

• Increased muscle and bone strength

• Capability for relaxation

If the Yoga Synergy Course does not fit in with your schedule, and you would like to practice Yoga Synergy with Alex, there are casual classes available each Saturday at 7:45 - 9 am. (7am - 8.15am from Saturday 29th April). Her Saturday students tell us it is a great way to feel energised for the weekend ahead.

Date:
Tuesday 2 May – 20 June

Time 7.30 pm – 9 pm

Cost: $185 / $165 Early bird paid by 22 April

About the teacher:

Alex has been practising yoga for more than 20 years. During this time she studied a three-year training program with the founders of Yoga  Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

As a qualified Yoga Synergy teacher, Alex ran the Yoga Synergy School in Manly, which she has taught at for more than 11 years. She  founded the Yoga Co-operative Manly and is excited about bringing Yoga Synergy to the Manly Yoga Centre. She has a warmth, energy  and real love for teaching that comes through in her classes.

As the mother of three young children, Alex understands the importance of student practice to bring balance in our busy lives, using the  physical body to connect the mind and the breath. At the same time, she believes that safely challenging the body, in a fun and intelligent  way, helps create a strong, healthy body and a calm, focused mind – not just on the mat, but beyond.

Yoga Synergy is a unique style of yoga combining traditional yoga teaching methods with a strong background in physiotherapy. Developed by Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss in 1984, this style is designed to be safe and accessible to all yoga practitioners, whether beginners, intermediate and advanced. Masterclass ~ Advanced yoga practise with David Burgess

Masterclass ~ Advanced yoga practise with David Burgess

We are delighted to be able to welcome back our good friend David Burgess to lead these monthly two-hour advanced yoga master classes. He is much loved and respected by both his peers and students alike. David’s teaching style has a zen-like quality, being clear and down to earth.

By advanced yoga here we are not talking about handstands, splits and lotus poses. These sessions rather are designed to provide students with a deeper exposure to and experience of the antarangas i.e. the inner limbs of classical yoga that allow one to go deeper into the more subtle realms, leading to states of higher consciousness and access to inner knowledge.

Yes there will be asana but in this context it will be included primarily to provide a platform upon which genuine pranayama (that integrates mudra, bandha and kumbhaka) can be undertaken and in turn provide another platform upon which meditation can be entered into.

Each two-hour class will comprise of around 30 minutes of asana 45 minutes of pranayama, with the associated bandhas and mudras and kumbhakas, and then conclude with a 15 minute practice of dharana (concentration). Ample time will be allocated at the end for Q&A.

These sessions are suitable for dedicated students and teachers of yoga who wish to deepen their experience and understanding of an integrated approach to classical yoga practice.

Four sessions are planned over the next four months and while each can stand alone, those who can attend all four will likely gain the most as the knowledge and practice of the former will incrementally underpin the latter.

Ideal if you wish to:

* Take your practice to a deeper layer

* Develop your knowledge from one of the best in the business

* Move toward higher stages of pranayama and bandhas

Here’s what David’s students say about his teaching ...

"David is an awesome teacher – he is exceptionally knowledgeable, serious, down-to-earth, funny and well… REAL. I’m so grateful! With his encouragement, I’ve learned to be content with where I’m at while also holding on to my aspirations, being patient, diligent and persistent – all so important for learning meditation and pranayama." ~ Mandy Trueman

“David’s extensive experience and embodied wisdom impress me every time. He is incredibly profound, commanding, funny and realistic all at once - a true master. If you want to deepen your understanding of yoga on all levels, he is your man." ~ Alana Smith

“David has a piercing authenticity about him. He inspires passion and a disciplined practice that has the ability to transform your life.” ~ Christine Neufeld

“David is a wonderful teacher. His down-to-earth attitude, compassion and sense of humour makes his teachings accessible, and his vast depth of knowledge on everything from the practices and their effects, to the subtle aspects of the monkey mind, means I always feel I am in safe hands.” ~ Tessa Hoffman

David is a life member of IYTA and currently teaches and assesses Pranayama & Meditation on their Diploma course.

Soul Mama Circle with Radha

Soul Mama Circle with Radha

The Soul Mama Circle is held once a month so that women can have a safe and calm space to come into after birthing their babies.

After the 'fourth trimester' or 'golden month' women are often ready to come back into society and share their experiences with others.

New mums will come together for a two-hour class consisting of tea, meditation and a women's circle that allows them to share their joys, challenges and transformation into motherhood.

Mums will be guided in meditation and Yoga Nidra; and learn relaxation with babe in arms.

Meeting other like-minded mum’s in the community helps women feel connected and not isolated.

Facilitated by Radha the Soul Mama Circle creates a safety net where women can be empowered and find honesty, joy and friendship in their journey of new motherhood.

Date: Wednesday 14 June

Time: 9:30 am – 11:30 am

She  founded the Yoga Co-operative Manly and is excited about bringing Yoga Synergy to the Manly Yoga Centre. She has a warmth, energy  and real love for teaching that comes through in her classes.

As the mother of three young children, Alex understands the importance of student practice to bring balance in our busy lives, using the  physical body to connect the mind and the breath. Winter Solstice Celebration with Radha

Winter Solstice Celebration with Radha

June 21st is the shortest day of the year and the longest night. At the time of the Winter Solstice the Sun stands at its lowest point.

Join Radha at the Winter Solstice to pause, acknowledge and reflect on our journey since the Summer Solstice.

Nature recedes and goes quiet and we follow by taking time for reflection and stillness, acknowledging what we have completed, and the insights and understandings we have gained, including those we may not be so comfortable with.

We will enjoy an early-morning meditation and yoga class, followed by an optional community breakfast at Ruby Lane.

Our celebration will begin at 5:45 am, before sunrise with a symbolic Spiral Meditation, allowing the space to sit and actively ritualise the process of sitting in darkness, honoring nature’s call for stillness and quiet reflection.

We then symbolically journey into our centre, with a walking meditation around the spiral to the centre candle, the aim to discover our inner light and strength.

This meditation will be followed by a yoga class where we will welcome the rising sun with Sun Salutations to connect with the uplifting vibrations and energies the sun provides. The class will include postures to build our inner strength, supporting us as we move through the quieter winter months.

The celebration will conclude with the opportunity to connect and chat with fellow yogis and yoginis over a delightful and nourishing breakfast at Ruby Lane.

Date: Wednesday 21 June

Time: 5:45 am –7 am

Cost: $21 or use your class pass (breakfast is optional and not included in the price)

21/06/2017 - 05:45 to 07:00

When we come together as a community with the intention of deepening our meditation practice, a powerful energy is created. With the support of each other, an experienced teacher and a peaceful environment the inherent wellness of our body, mind and heart is naturally nurtured.

Each 2-hour class will include:

• 2 classical meditations

• gentle asanas (yoga postures) with a focus on aligning body, mind and breath

• pranayama (breathing practices) for balancing and refining the energetic body

Yoga Synergy ~ Fire Sequence Course with Alex

Yoga Synergy ~ Fire Sequence Course with Alex

The Yoga Synergy sequences are named in honour of the pancha mahabhuta (5 great elements) - Earth, water, fire, Air and ether.

Each of the sequences are unique in their own right, and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

Fire is the third of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences, designed to be energising, heating and dynamic, and is practised during the cold winter months.

According to Ayurveda, Yoga’s sister science, the location of Fire (Agni) in the body is the small intestine. Within our bodies, the fire or energy binds the atoms together. Fire transforms food into energy. It creates the impulses of nervous reactions, our feelings, and even our thought processes.

The intention with which we practise this sequence is to generate the internal fire, to boost immunity and maintain vitality through the coolness of winter.

Over an 8-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing the practice with pranayama (breathing practices) and relaxation.
