Yoga Synergy -The Air Sequence 6 wk Course with Alex

Yoga Synergy -The Air Sequence 6 wk Course with Alex

The Yoga Synergy sequences are named in honour of the Pancha mahabhuta (5 great elements) – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

Each of the sequences is unique in its own right, and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

Air is the fourth of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences, designed to lighten the body and spirit as we move out of the cooler winter and on into spring.

In Ayurveda, Air (Vaayu), the wind, is the backdrop of our environment, the an aspect that we may not always notice. Air is the second lightest element next to Ether, in that we can perceive it both visually and tactilely, in the branches of a tree as they move in the wind or the feel of it on our skin.

The intention with which we practise the Air sequence is:

* To move the stale energy of winter out of our system

* Bring a lightness to our being

* Increase mobility and movement through all the systems of the body

* Cleanse our entire system (body, breath and mind)

* Create mental clarity and positivity

Over an 6-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing each practice with pranayama and relaxation.

Yoga Synergy is a dynamic Vinyasa-style of yoga with a physiotherapy background that provides students with a strong but safe flowing and meditative yoga practice.

Students benefit from this dynamic style of Yoga in the following ways:

* Postures that stretch, tone and strengthen the entire skeletal system, working not only on the body’s frame but the internal organs, glands and nerves

* Concentration and attention in each posture encourages deep body awareness and relaxation

* Breathing exercises refresh and cleanse the body and help to calm the mind

* Improved vitality and flexibility

* Enhanced immune system response

* Increased muscle and bone strength

* Enhance capability for relaxation

6 Week Course

Date: Tuesday 29 August – Tuesday 3 October

Time: 7.30 pm - 9 pm

About the teacher:

Alex has been practising yoga for more than 20 years. During this time she studied a three-year training program with the founders of Yoga  Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

As a qualified Yoga Synergy teacher, Alex ran the Yoga Synergy School in Manly, which she has taught at for more than 11 years. She  founded the Yoga Co-operative Manly and is excited about bringing Yoga Synergy to the Manly Yoga Centre. She has a warmth, energy  and real love for teaching that comes through in her classes.

As the mother of three young children, Alex understands the importance of student practice to bring balance in our busy lives, using the  physical body to connect the mind and the breath. At the same time, she believes that safely challenging the body, in a fun and intelligent  way, helps create a strong, healthy body and a calm, focused mind – not just on the mat, but beyond.

Flower Havan & Kirtan

Flower Havan & Kirtan

Havan is a ceremony from the ancient Indian Vedic tradition. An essential part of havan is the chanting of mantras. Each month on a Saturday we chant 108 rounds of a healing mantra known as the maha-mrit-yun-jaya mantra. It is a universal mantra that is chanted for health, healing, transformation, energy, and support in the face of difficulties.

It is important to understand that this is a yoga practice which is not done for ones own entertainment, it is a practice dedicated to others. It is a way of giving to others which is beyond the material level.

Kirtan is a joyful uplifting mantra practice. Kirtan is a little different from chanting in that the mantras are sung with melody and rhythm. It is a practice renowned for its ability to channel the emotions, purify the mind and lighten the heart.
Best of all it's really easy to do and you don't even need a good singing voice.

Proceeds raised from the evening will go towards Give Yoga.

Date: Saturday 7 October

Time: 5:30 pm - 7:15 pm (doors open at 5.15 pm)

Yoga Synergy - Ether Sequence with Alex

Yoga Synergy - Ether Sequence with Alex

Yoga Synergy is a flow style of yoga practice, with it's aim to teach yoga in a safe, fun and enjoyable way. Each posture is taught with simple through to complex versions, enabling you to vary the intensity of your practice.

Emphasis is on balancing strength and flexibility, correct breathing with postures that flow into another posture building the sequence from standing to floor postures, finishing with pranayama and relaxation.

Ether is the last of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences and is practised at the time of year when the weather becomes warmer and summer is more than a promise. As the year is drawing to a close, there is much general exhaustion felt in body and mind.

Each of the Yoga Synergy sequences are unique in their own right, each designed around the five great elements, (earth, water, fire, air and ether) and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

The Ether sequence is designed to help maintain a sense of balance and calm, to unify and energise the body, mind and spirit, allowing our being to transition smoothly to the end of the year.

In Ayurvedic terms, Ether (Akasha) means ‘space’ or ‘emptiness’.  Ether is the lightest of the elements, it is the space in which everything happens; the field that is simultaneously the source of all matter and the space in which it exists.

The intention with which we practise the Ether Sequence is to:

• help maintain a sense of balance and calm

• unify and energise the body, mind and spirit

• allow for a smooth transition to the end of the year

• help still the mind

Over an 6-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures, including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching both simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing each practice with pranayama and relaxation.

Be Here Now: Science of Focusing the Mind with Dr Maarten Immink

Be Here Now: Science of Focusing the Mind with Dr Maarten Immink

ONE DAY WORKSHOP

A study by researchers from Harvard University in 2010 demonstrated that people are not paying attention to what they are doing about 47% of the time.

This tendency for our mind to wander and become distracted is thought to contribute to increased stress, decreased happiness and poorer performance at school, work and in sport competitions.

In this workshop, Dr Maarten Immink, who is the Senior Lecturer in Motor Learning and Control within the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Australia (UniSA), will provide an overview of recent scientific developments in how to train the mind to be more focused and present in the moment.

This will include coverage of recent studies investigating the effects of mindfulness techniques on brain function, including work from Dr Immink’s own research department.

We’ll address common misconceptions about mindfulness techniques and review practical guidelines to get the most out of practice with these techniques. The mindfulness meditation will involve focused attention and open monitoring techniques.

By attending this workshop you will understand:

* the benefits of mindfulness techniques for health, wellbeing and performance

* the brain processes involved when our mind wanders and when the mind is engaged in mindfulness techniques

* how different styles of mindfulness meditation influence attention, decision-making and creativity

* how to use current research evidence to inform effective mindfulness practice

The benefits of attending this one-day workshop:

* Increased knowledge about the role of mind and brain in health, wellbeing and performance

* Increased knowledge about how mindfulness techniques shape the mind and brain to improve self-awareness and regulation

* First-hand experience with different forms of mindfulness meditation through guided practices in the workshop

* Evidence-based strategies to increase effectiveness and enjoyment of the practice of mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation practices involving focused attention and open monitoring techniques will be practiced during the workshop.

Dr Immink’s previous workshops at Manly Yoga have been extremely popular; we recommend early booking to avoid disappointment.

This workshop is worth 6 CPD points with Yoga Australia.

There will be a break for lunch.

Price includes afternoon tea.

Date: Sunday 15 October 2017

Time: 10 am – 5 pm

Cost: $165 / $145 Early Bird paid by 8 October

25% discount for 6 month pass holders

About the teacher

The workshop will be run by Dr Maarten A. Immink who holds a doctorate in motor behaviour from Texas A&M University.

He is a Senior Lecturer in Motor Learning and Control within the School of Health Sciences at the University of South Australia (UniSA).
Maarten has over 20 years experience studying, researching and teaching the physiological and psychological basis of human learning and performance.

Dr Immink is an associate researcher with the world-renowned Sansom Institute for Health Research, an associated member of the Centre for Sleep Research, and a research member with the Exercise for Health and Human Performance research groups at UniSA.

Part of his research explores the basic science behind factors that affect behaviour, including fatigue, stress, arousal and affective states.  He also investigates how mind-body training, including yoga and mindfulness meditation, mediates the influence of these factors.  He is an accredited yoga and meditation teacher.

Study Break Yoga with Alana

In the competitive world of high school, yoga can help destress and decompress after a long day of studies.

Study Break Yoga is catered specifically for high school students aged from 15 to 18, providing them with a comfortable and supportive environment in which to practise with their peers and friends.

Students will be given a Home Practice Program to follow between 10 and 15 minutes a day over the month and will be able to ask Alana questions about their practice at any time through an online group forum page, as well as discuss their yoga practice and school life with the other students in the group.

At each session, students will revise, progress and add to their skills for stress management and connect with a group of like-minded teens who want to take charge of their own wellbeing during their final years of high school.

Alana was a Year 11 & 12 Co-ordinator and Senior English and French teacher at Queenwood School and is now a yoga teacher, hence has specific experience in high school and yoga education to share with students.

Students benefit from this Vinyasa flow style of Yoga in the following ways:

* Postures that stretch, tone and strengthen the entire skeletal system, working not only on the body’s frame but the internal organs, glands and nerves

* Concentration and attention in each posture encourages deep body awareness and relaxation

* Breathing exercises refresh and cleanse the body and help to calm the mind

* Improved vitality and flexibility

* Enhanced immune system response

* Increased muscle and bone strength

* Enhance capability for relaxation

Date: Tuesday 17 October – 21 November

Time 7.30 pm – 9 pm

Cost: $145 / $125 Early bird paid by 10 October

Yoga Synergy is a unique style of yoga combining traditional yoga teaching methods with a strong background in physiotherapy. Developed by Simon Borg Olivier and Bianca Machliss in 1984, this style is designed to be safe and accessible to all yoga practitioners, whether beginners, intermediate and advanced. Kids Yoga with Pia

Kids Yoga with Pia

For children of primary school age

We’re delighted to welcome Pia from Young Yogis to Manly Yoga. Pia will be running a 4 week course for primary school aged kids starting on Tuesday 31 October.

Yoga is beneficial to everyone no matter what their age. For children, numerous studies have been conducted that demonstrate the physical benefits of increased strength, flexibility, energy, improved balance, and coordination.

Studies have also shown that yoga provides children with the skills to be calm, compassionate, strong and resilient and improve their performance academically through increased focus and concentration.

Pia believes that Yoga is appreciated and enjoyed by children of all ages, however a children’s yoga session is very different to an adult’s class. “The key to being successful when introducing yoga to children is in the way it is presented to them.” says Pia.

Pia's yoga classes are fun, fairly dynamic, creative and stimulating to the child’s imagination. Simple breathing exercises and relaxation techniques are always included in order for the children to acquire the art of relaxing the body and learning how to be still and peaceful within themselves.

If you have a child of primary school age who would be interested in coming along then please secure their place. Booking is essential for this course as spaces are limited.

4 Week Course

Date: Tuesday 31 October - Tuesday 21 November

Time: 3:45 pm – 4:30 pm

Cost: $65

If you have children of different ages who are keen to attend a yoga class at Manly Yoga, please do get in touch by emailing us at info@manlyyoga.com.au

About Pia O’Connor

With over ten years of yoga experience and formal training done in Sweden, India and Australia, Pia’s major life-passion is to share the therapeutic benefits of yoga.

Whether it is for children or elderly, Pia has seen the power of the practice and how yoga might serve as an incredible tool for healing various physical and mental health conditions.

For Pia personally, yoga is well and truly integrated into her life. Being a busy mother of three children and running a small business, yoga is her sanctuary and she feels a regular practise allows her to come back to her self and staying open to the constant change and learning in life… It is the endless aspect of self-discovery that keeps her hooked, as well as the fact that it seems to keep her injury free while running ultra-marathons.

With a commanding presence yet a light heartedness, Pia creates a supportive space for her students, young and golden, to explore the physical, mental and spiritual fields within each individual. She is passionate about helping students work to their limits and beyond, with mindfulness and self-love.

Most of all, it’s about making people HAPPY. Experiencing FREEDOM and a sense of SPACE. These are all words you will hear Pia say in class as it is her wish for you all to walk out of the class feeling your mind, body and soul bursting with awesomeness!
