Yoga Synergy ~ Fire Sequence Course with Alex

Yoga Synergy ~ Fire Sequence Course with Alex

The Yoga Synergy sequences are named in honour of the pancha mahabhuta (5 great elements) - Earth, water, fire, Air and ether.

Each of the sequences are unique in their own right, and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

Fire is the third of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences, designed to be energising, heating and dynamic, and is practised during the cold winter months.

According to Ayurveda, Yoga’s sister science, the location of Fire (Agni) in the body is the small intestine. Within our bodies, the fire or energy binds the atoms together. Fire transforms food into energy. It creates the impulses of nervous reactions, our feelings, and even our thought processes.

The intention with which we practise this sequence is to generate the internal fire, to boost immunity and maintain vitality through the coolness of winter.

Over an 8-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing the practice with pranayama (breathing practices) and relaxation.

Yoga Synergy is a dynamic style with a physiotherapy background that provides students with a strong but safe practice.

Students benefit from this dynamic style of Yoga in the following ways:

* Postures that stretch, tone and strengthen the entire skeletal system, working not only on the body’s frame but the internal organs, glands and nerves

* Concentration and attention in each posture encourages deep body awareness and relaxation

* Breathing exercises refresh and cleanse the body and help to calm the mind

* Improved vitality and flexibility

* Enhanced immune system response

* Increased muscle and bone strength

* Capability for relaxation

8 Week Course

Date: Tuesday 27 June – Tuesday 15 August

Time: 7:30 pm – 9 pm

Cost: $185 / $165 Early bird paid by 21 June

About the teacher:

Alex has been practising yoga for more than 20 years. During this time she studied a three-year training program with the founders of Yoga  Synergy, Simon Borg-Olivier and Bianca Machliss.

As a qualified Yoga Synergy teacher, Alex ran the Yoga Synergy School in Manly, which she has taught at for more than 11 years. She  founded the Yoga Co-operative Manly and is excited about bringing Yoga Synergy to the Manly Yoga Centre. She has a warmth, energy  and real love for teaching that comes through in her classes.

As the mother of three young children, Alex understands the importance of student practice to bring balance in our busy lives, using the  physical body to connect the mind and the breath. At the same time, she believes that safely challenging the body, in a fun and intelligent  way, helps create a strong, healthy body and a calm, focused mind – not just on the mat, but beyond.

Masterclass ~ Advanced yoga practise With David Burgess

Masterclass ~ Advanced yoga practise With David Burgess

We are delighted to be able to welcome back our good friend David Burgess to lead these monthly two-hour advanced yoga master classes. He is much loved and respected by both his peers and students alike. David’s teaching style has a zen-like quality, being clear and down to earth.

By advanced yoga here we are not talking about handstands, splits and lotus poses. These sessions rather are designed to provide students with a deeper exposure to and experience of the antarangas i.e. the inner limbs of classical yoga that allow one to go deeper into the more subtle realms, leading to states of higher consciousness and access to inner knowledge.

Yes there will be asana but in this context it will be included primarily to provide a platform upon which genuine pranayama (that integrates mudra, bandha and kumbhaka) can be undertaken and in turn provide another platform upon which meditation can be entered into.

Each two-hour class will comprise of around 30 minutes of asana 45 minutes of pranayama, with the associated bandhas and mudras and kumbhakas, and then conclude with a 15 minute practice of dharana (concentration). Ample time will be allocated at the end for Q&A.

These sessions are suitable for dedicated students and teachers of yoga who wish to deepen their experience and understanding of an integrated approach to classical yoga practice.

Four sessions are planned over the next four months and while each can stand alone, those who can attend all four will likely gain the most as the knowledge and practice of the former will incrementally underpin the latter.

Ideal if you wish to:

* Take your practice to a deeper layer

* Develop your knowledge from one of the best in the business

* Move toward higher stages of pranayama and bandhas

Here’s what David’s students say about his teaching ...

"David is an awesome teacher – he is exceptionally knowledgeable, serious, down-to-earth, funny and well… REAL. I’m so grateful! With his encouragement, I’ve learned to be content with where I’m at while also holding on to my aspirations, being patient, diligent and persistent – all so important for learning meditation and pranayama." ~ Mandy Trueman

“David’s extensive experience and embodied wisdom impress me every time. He is incredibly profound, commanding, funny and realistic all at once - a true master. If you want to deepen your understanding of yoga on all levels, he is your man." ~ Alana Smith

“David has a piercing authenticity about him. He inspires passion and a disciplined practice that has the ability to transform your life.” ~ Christine Neufeld

“David is a wonderful teacher. His down-to-earth attitude, compassion and sense of humour makes his teachings accessible, and his vast depth of knowledge on everything from the practices and their effects, to the subtle aspects of the monkey mind, means I always feel I am in safe hands.” ~ Tessa Hoffman

David is a life member of IYTA and currently teaches and assesses Pranayama & Meditation on their Diploma course.

* a systematic relaxation practice (yoga nidra)

* breathing techniques to activate the relaxation response

* enjoyable techniques for developing calm focus

* how to recognise the symptoms of stress and manage it

* yoga postures for calming and energising the body

In addition, the course will equip students with techniques to cope with “crisis” moments, including  advice on developing a home practice and weekly emails with guided practices and further information.

Soul Mama Circle with Radha

Soul Mama Circle with Radha

The Soul Mama Circle is held once a month so that women can have a safe and calm space to come into after birthing their babies.

After the 'fourth trimester' or 'golden month' women are often ready to come back into society and share their experiences with others.

New mums will come together for a two-hour class consisting of tea, meditation and a women's circle that allows them to share their joys, challenges and transformation into motherhood.

Mums will be guided in meditation and Yoga Nidra; and learn relaxation with babe in arms.

Meeting other like-minded mum’s in the community helps women feel connected and not isolated.

Facilitated by Radha the Soul Mama Circle creates a safety net where women can be empowered and find honesty, joy and friendship in their journey of new motherhood.

Midlife and Menopause – A New Paradigm with Maree Lipschitz

Midlife and Menopause – A New Paradigm with Maree Lipschitz

‘At menarche (puberty) a woman enters her power. During her menstruating years, she practices her power. At menopause, she becomes her power.’

Old Native American Wisdom

UNDERSTANDING THIS EXTRAORDINARY RITE OF PASSAGE INTO BECOMING YOUR POWER

Do you feel that you’re too old, past it, over the hill? Like someone has taken over your brain or perhaps that you’re losing your femaleness? Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or unable to shake off any shame associated with growing older?

Midlife women often feel like they are going insane with the symptoms they experience and they can feel deeply alone because such feelings at this point in your life are just not talked about.

Most women enter their midlife years with no idea that peri-menopausal symptoms often start in our early 40s – a good 5 to10 years before our menstruation stops.

This workshop will give you vital, balanced information about the huge changes at midlife and menopause to inspire you to greater health, peace and contentment with your age and your life.

By attending this workshop you will:

• learn about the physical, biological, psychological and spiritual changes that this rite of passage of menopause brings about

• understand the common symptoms of menopause and peri-menopause and take away some strategies to deal with them

• gain an appreciation of the wisdom of the female body and how to nurture your feminine through this phase

• know that losing our fertility does NOT mean losing our sexuality or our femaleness

• discuss our sexuality and energy management at midlife and how to relight your libido

• learn about the changes in the brain that take place throughout this midlife transition and the major themes that affect women

• appreciate how useful meditation is for midlife women [women at midlife and why

• gain a new perspective on growing older and learn to step into our sovereignty as a wise woman

Here’s what previous attendees of this workshop have had to say…

I found the day an insightful journey into my own understanding of menopause. Making sense of my emotions and physical symptoms has been very helpful. I am grateful for the knowledge and wisdom that Maree shares. Rilka, Blue Mountains

Maree’s midlife workshop is a must for every 35- plus woman. Learn how to become your power at menopause, what to expect along the way and how to make the most of this amazing transition called menopause. Trina Bawden-Smith, Coogee

I found Maree’s workshop extremely useful and practical. She’s given me tools to better understand the changes that I will face over the next phase of my life. I feel empowered as a woman, in an area that is usually only spoken of in a negative way. Thank you, Maree, I’m so glad I came!  Y.O. 43 yrs old

I found Maree to be so warm and inviting as a group facilitator. It was her inclusiveness of all group members that allowed for beautiful, open, insightful & honest sharing.  Maree also provides the group members the space to speak freely about menopause –- a subject that is unfortunately still taboo in our society & world. I am walking away feeling that I can be proud & grateful to go through perimenopause & menstruation with grace, knowledge and self-love. Jacqui Robilliard, Central Coast

Maree’s workshop has opened me up to so much more potential in my life. This new space of menopause now feels exciting and fun! Maree brings such honesty and intelligence to the lessons of womanhood which are so needed in our modern world. Thank you so much!  Louise

An essential reminder of the wisdom, love and connection that is always there for us women to share. Sue (Bullaburra)

Stress-Buster Course for High School Students (aged 15+)

Stress-Buster Course for High School Students (aged 15+)

Are you feeling stressed about your school work? Do you panic before or during exams?

Do you often feel anxious or overwhelmed and find it hard to sleep or relax?

At Manly Yoga we specialise in mind-body techniques for stress reduction and we are offering our popular 5-week course for high-school students that helps them develop a calmer, more focused approach to their studies.

Our regular yoga/meditation teacher, Alana, was an HSC English teacher and Year Coordinator at Queenwood. She understands what anxious students are going through and the best techniques to develop calm resilience.

During this 5-week course students will experientially learn:

* a systematic relaxation practice (yoga nidra)

* breathing techniques to activate the relaxation response

* enjoyable techniques for developing calm focus

* to create a positive resolve

* how to recognise the symptoms of stress and manage it

* yoga postures for calming and energising the body

In addition, the course will equip students with techniques to cope with “crisis” moments, including  advice on developing a home practice and weekly emails with guided practices and further information.

With just 10 minutes of frequent practice at bedtime or on the bus, students can enjoy longer-term effects of these calming techniques, helping to regulate their nervous systems for greater peace and wellbeing during school and beyond.

NOTE for past students of this course: we will build on techniques learned in the previous course so you can further develop your practice.

Here’s what some past students say about the Stress-Buster Course:

“The course has been helpful with managing stress and feeling at peace with myself. I’ve like learning about my body and understanding what it feels and why. I’ve appreciated how accepting and understanding Alana is of everyone’s individual needs, limits and experience.”

- Nicy Bragg, Year 11 student

“The class is always amazing, calming and enjoyable.  I love having a place to de-stress as well as learn new breathing and yoga skills.”

- Georgie Gray, Year 11 student

“The course has been really helpful for managing stress and learning relaxation techniques. I have learnt a lot about yoga I never knew. I have really enjoyed the physical aspects - Salutes to the Sun in particular. But I have also loved the meditation as I have practised being fully relaxed.”

- Sienna Kavalec, Year 11 student

“This course has really helped me with accepting the fact that thoughts come and go naturally… I learnt to control my breathing and use yoga techniques to deal with stress and anxiety.”

- Teagan Drummond, Year 10 student

“The course has helped with stress and anxiety and the management and regulation of those feelings. I liked how we customised each class to what we needed on that day.”

- Lily O’Neill, Year 12 student

“I liked learning new techniques to get to sleep and meditation, and getting weekly handouts with all the poses. The course was so worth the money and time. I have loved it and Alana has been great.”

- Jesse Barnes, Year 10 student

Date: Thursday 17 August - Thursday 14 September

Time: 4:30 pm – 6 pm

Kids Yoga 4 Week Course with Pia

Kids Yoga 4 Week Course with Pia

For kids of primary school age

We’re delighted to welcome Pia from Young Yogis to Manly Yoga. Pia will be running a 4 week course for primary school aged kids starting on Tuesday 29 August,

Yoga is beneficial to everyone no matter what their age. For children, numerous studies have been conducted that demonstrate the physical benefits of increased strength, flexibility, energy, improved balance, and coordination.

Studies have also shown that yoga provides children with the skills to be calm, compassionate, strong and resilient and improve their performance academically through increased focus and concentration.

Pia believes that Yoga is appreciated and enjoyed by children of all ages, however a children’s yoga session is very different to an adult’s class. “The key to being successful when introducing yoga to children is in the way it is presented to them.” says Pia.

Pia's yoga classes are fun, fairly dynamic, creative and stimulating to the child’s imagination. Simple breathing exercises and relaxation techniques are always included in order for the children to acquire the art of relaxing the body and learning how to be still and peaceful within themselves.

If you have a child of primary school age who would be interested in coming along then please secure their place. Booking is essential for this course as spaces are limited.

4 Week Course

Date: Tuesday 29 August - Tuesday 29 September

Time: 3:45 pm – 4:30 pm

Cost: $65

If you have children of different ages who are keen to attend a yoga class at Manly Yoga, please do get in touch by emailing us at info@manlyyoga.com.au

About Pia O’Connor

With over ten years of yoga experience and formal training done in Sweden, India and Australia, Pia’s major life-passion is to share the therapeutic benefits of yoga.

Whether it is for children or elderly, Pia has seen the power of the practice and how yoga might serve as an incredible tool for healing various physical and mental health conditions.

For Pia personally, yoga is well and truly integrated into her life. Being a busy mother of three children and running a small business, yoga is her sanctuary and she feels a regular practise allows her to come back to her self and staying open to the constant change and learning in life… It is the endless aspect of self-discovery that keeps her hooked, as well as the fact that it seems to keep her injury free while running ultra-marathons.

With a commanding presence yet a light heartedness, Pia creates a supportive space for her students, young and golden, to explore the physical, mental and spiritual fields within each individual. She is passionate about helping students work to their limits and beyond, with mindfulness and self-love.

Most of all, it’s about making people HAPPY. Experiencing FREEDOM and a sense of SPACE. These are all words you will hear Pia say in class as it is her wish for you all to walk out of the class feeling your mind, body and soul bursting with awesomeness!

Yoga Synergy -The Air Sequence 6 wk Course with Alex

Yoga Synergy -The Air Sequence 6 wk Course with Alex

The Yoga Synergy sequences are named in honour of the Pancha mahabhuta (5 great elements) – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether.

Each of the sequences is unique in its own right, and therefore open to all students whether they have attended any of the previous courses or not.

Air is the fourth of the 5 Yoga Synergy sequences, designed to lighten the body and spirit as we move out of the cooler winter and on into spring.

In Ayurveda, Air (Vaayu), the wind, is the backdrop of our environment, the an aspect that we may not always notice. Air is the second lightest element next to Ether, in that we can perceive it both visually and tactilely, in the branches of a tree as they move in the wind or the feel of it on our skin.

The intention with which we practise the Air sequence is:

* To move the stale energy of winter out of our system

* Bring a lightness to our being

* Increase mobility and movement through all the systems of the body

* Cleanse our entire system (body, breath and mind)

* Create mental clarity and positivity

Over an 6-week period we will build a sequence, focusing on the standing postures including the Salutation sequence, then inversions (teaching simple and more challenging versions) and floor postures, completing each practice with pranayama and relaxation.

Yoga Synergy is a dynamic Vinyasa-style of yoga with a physiotherapy background that provides students with a strong but safe flowing and meditative yoga practice.

* Improved vitality and flexibility

* Enhanced immune system response

* Increased muscle and bone strength

* Enhance capability for relaxation

6 Week Course

Date: Tuesday 29 August – Tuesday 3 October

Time: 7.30 pm - 9 pm

Cost: $145 / $125 Early bird paid by 19 August

25% discount for 6 month pass holders
