Yoga
What is Yoga? Yoga means the experience of unity, harmony and oneness. It is
an experience involving body, mind, emotions and spirit.
Origin of Yoga
Yoga first arose more than ten thousand years ago. It grew from the need
to develop an understanding of the various aspects of our experience,
from the physical through to the subtle. Throughout history it has proved
an invaluable tool for dealing with the challenges of human existence.
Yoga Today
Through yoga, people are able to find the peace and resilience needed to
live in a complex, ever changing world and to discover their own deeper,
intrinsic identity. Yoga provides a system for managing all aspects of
our being, from our health through to our sense of purpose and meaning.
Satyananda Yoga
What is Satyananda Yoga? Satyananda Yoga is an internationally renowned
system of yoga that is firmly based in yogic tradition and adapted to
suit the needs of contemporary living. It includes Hatha, Raja, Karma,
Jnana, Mantra and Bhakti Yogas as well as other traditions and presents
them in a package that is unified but also flexible enough to enable
practices to be applied according to individual needs. Satyananda Yoga
provides a solid, systematic step-by step approach to Yoga, based on
safety and common sense.
Satyananda Yoga is for everyone
People who practice Satyananda Yoga are of all ages and levels of fitness
and come from many walks of life. Satyananda Yoga provides everyone,
regardless of social background, with the tools for health, peace of
mind and an inspired vision for their lives.
How does Satyananda Yoga
work?
Through an approach that incorporates an awareness of all aspects of
being, Satyananda Yoga promotes the alignment of the delicate balance
between body, mind, emotions and spirit. Through awakening the individual's
awareness and inherent self-healing powers, physical disease and mental
stress can be managed and relieved. By steadying the emotions and calming
the mind, a sense of perspective can be gained, bringing a feeling of
peace, freedom and inner strength.
Origins and Founders
Satyananda Yoga is a reflection of Swami Satyananda's life mission to distil
the essence of yoga and make it meaningful in today's world. A disciple of Swami
Sivananda of Rishikesh, Swami Satyananda founded the Bihar School of Yoga in
1964 and has gone on to train thousands of teachers and practitioners from around
the world. Satyananda Yoga was established in Australia in the early seventies.
Swami Satyananda’s successor, Swami Niranjanananda, is a modern master
of yoga whose understanding spans two worlds - the scientific Western culture
and the mystical wisdom of the East.Known as a yogi from birth, he began his
formal training in India at the age of four. From the age of eleven, he has toured
extensively in Europe, America and Australia. This experience has endowed him
with a deep understanding of the application of Yoga for the Western mind and
society.
Satyananda Yoga Today
In recent years Bihar Yoga Bharati has evolved from Bihar School of Yoga
and is now recognised as a University by the Government of India. Courses
up to postgraduate level in Applied Yoga, Yogic Philosophy, Yogic Psychology
and Ecology are available. The Australian Satyananda Yoga campuses at
Rocklyn (Vic) and Mangrove (NSW) offer training in Yogic Studies with
equivalent status to undergraduate courses at Bihar Yoga Bharati. Satyananda
Yoga is actively engaged in the social application of yoga. Classes are
currently taught throughout Australia in prisons, drug rehabilitation
centres, hospitals, aged care centres, schools, businesses and sports institutions
- wherever yoga can be effective and there is a perceived need, it is being
offered.
