What We Teach

At Manly Yoga we teach a classical, hatha style of yoga, which originates from northern India.

There are generally two types of yoga on offer originating in either southern India or northern India. The southern Indian styles tend to be more athletic and physical, such as Ashtanga and Iyengar.

As northern India is geographically closer to Tibet, the yoga styles, which have emerged from that area, have a flavour of Tibetan Buddhism, with an emphasis on mindfulness and with seated meditation included in their yoga practices.

The main focus in our classes is on the cultivation of awareness or mindfulness. For example, when practising the physical postures we encourage students (where possible) to practise with their eyes closed, so that they can really feel into their own body and listen to the information their body is giving them. It’s not about achieving a particular physical outcome or aesthetic.

Your practice of yoga is something that is unique only to you.  Your body is a unique vessel, one of a kind, and your mind and memory are created by a collection of experiences that only you ever have the potential to understand.

Classes at Manly Yoga are taught in a way that is adaptable for all people, variations are taught for all postures to make them as soft or intense as you desire.

Each class at Manly Yoga includes components of:

• Asana (postures) 60 mins

• Pranayama (breath-work)

• Yoga Nidra

• Mindfulness & OR Meditation (cultivating awareness and experiencing relaxation)

The style of yoga at Manly Yoga is one which works on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and, if one is inclined, spiritual.

You can check with any of our teachers or call reception to find out what would best suit you.

Meditation techniques will assist in managing stress, anxiety, and will enhance physical wellbeing. As these classes do not have any postures in them they are particularly suitable for those with injuries, or those re establishing their health. The class is comprised of the full 30 minute Yoga Nidra practice, followed by pranayama and meditation.

Meditation Fundamentals Level Two

Men's Yoga

In the privacy of a small class, designed and taught by a man, you’ll enjoy increased flexibility, strength and endurance. A regular yoga class will help prevent injuries, reduce stress and improve your overall health.

Post Natal

This class is especially for mothers with babies under 6 months. You’ll practice gentle postures and relaxation that re establish physical and emotional health. The class concludes with a cup of tea and casual discussion around yogic lifestyle and motherhood.

Prenatal

These classes are designed specifically to the needs of pregnant women. They offer mums-to-be an opportunity to slow down and connect with their changing body and growing baby within. The classes include deep relaxation (Yoga Nidra), calming breathing techniques and meditation. We recommend you begin yoga when you’ve reached your 12th week of pregnancy.

In this class you'll explore yoga asana from a subtle point of view intergrating awareness,

of the chakras and the pranic body. Recommended for students who have a home pracitce and have attended weekly classes for over 2 years.

Seniors Open

These are friendly and sociable classes for those over 60 years of age.  Practices work on increasing joint suppleness, strength, flexibility, balance, lung capacity, memory and concentration. Our senior’s teacher is well regarded for her empathetic approach to the adjustments and challenges we face as we age.

Synergy - Vinyasa Flow

Yin / Hatha

This class includes a balance of moderate level Yang Hatha practices and restorative Yin poses.

Yang poses focus on the musclular system, and involve movement and dynamism. Yin poses target flexibility and tone in the deeper connective tissues, such as the joints and ligaments, through deep yet relaxing held poses.

Yin Yoga

A class where the postures are held for 2 – 5 minutes each. Postures focus on developing flexibility in the joints (rather than the muscles) by gently stretching and compressing the ligaments and fascia of the body. This class is the perfect compliment to any exercise or weight training especially if you want to experience more lightness and ease in your body.

Yoga Nidra & Asana

A class designed to stretch out physical tension through yoga postures and then relax deeply, physically, mentally and emotionally with a full 30 minute Yoga Nidra practice.
